The National Fire Authority yesterday  were able prevent a house fire in Kinoya Road from spreading, which a neighbour is thankful for.

“When NFA arrived they were able to save our house which was about to catch fire also as our home was the closest to the house that was engulfed, and luckily, our home was saved,” said neighbour Bale Dolokoto.

The 25-year-old owner of the burnt home, Kinijioji Sagogo, was in a state of shock with the loss, says Ms Dolokoto.

When the Fiji Sun team arrived on the scene, Mr Sagogo had left.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the Police had received the report of the fire and the National Fire Authority was conducting their investigation. Ms Dolokoto said her family was getting ready for their Sunday church service when they saw the fire in their neighbours’ home.

“The smoke was coming out from near the roof, but we thought it was one of the neighbours burning rubbish,” she said.

“We didn’t know it was a real fire from the house until another of our neighbours decided to call the National Fire Authority,’’ Ms Dolokoto said.

She said the fire created a scene and all the neighbours rushed to help stop the fire by pouring water before NFA arrived.

“My husband covered himself so that he could withstand the heat.”

Ms Dolokoto said there was no one in Mr Sagogo’s home when the fire started.

She said the owner of the house had been living there for more than 20 years and both of his parents had passed away. She said it could have been a worse situation if a breeze was blowing during the fire.

“Lucky we were still at home when the fire started, if we were away our house to would have been burned down too, we are thankful to God no one died,” she said.
