Boxer Matthew Michael gets his biggest break when he takes on former Fiji middleweight champion Abhay Chand in the main bout of the Kiran Boxing Promotions at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka on August 12.

The former national amateur boxing star who hails from Juju in Rotuma beat veteran Nereo Cakautini last month to earn the fight against Chand who is from Navosa.

Promoter Ben Krishna confirmed to SUNsports that the two boxers are ready to battle it out as their careers are at stake. Krishna also confirmed that two Australian boxers Fernando Lumacad and Tyson Manes have been included into the programme.

“The programme is all set to go as we’ve finalised everything with the boxers,” he said.

“Interestingly Jeff Malcolm will be bringing two boxers to fight in the programme which I am thankful for his effort. Jeff has fought with some of the country’s top boxers so this is another bonus for Fijian boxing. This will be my biggest fight of the country and the return to Lawaqa after so many years is to bring revival to the province that has produced many of the country’s top boxers.”

Malcolm fought former Fiji golden boy Sakaraia Ve in 1978 where he lost on points. The veteran Australian however, has gone on to beat Fijian boxers like Joe Nitiva, Anthony Naidu, Pauliasi Ratu, Sovita Tabuarua and Tevita Vakalalabure. Krishna said they’ve worked hard on their match making by including prominent boxers to take on upcoming ones who are going to be the future stars of the sport.

“There will be 14 bouts in total including a women’s bout and three additional exhibition bouts. We’re thankful to BCF for screening the boxers and finally giving the green light for the programme.”
