Nacokaika native Apisai Silasila is looking forward to a sinus operation after getting a screening yesterday from an Israeli medical specialist at the Colonial War Memorial hospital in Suva.

“I hope this operation will help me,” said the 69-year-old man from Naitasiri.

Mr Silasila said he came for a review last month at CWM hospital and was informed by the doctors about the visit of the team from Israel.

“I was happy, and I was looking forward for their arrival,” he said.

Three highly trained doctors and a nurse conducted screenings yesterday and will be treating patients from today until August 2.

The team was expecting to screen about 40 patients and set up appointments if needed to treat them.

Dr Eduard Pudel said Mr Silasila was suffering from sinusitis and had recurrent nasal polyps that was contributing to the infection.

Dr Pudel said this was potentially risky because if left alone it would potentially cause damage to his eyes or brain.

“If we do the operation we can clear out the polyps now, and improve Mr Apisai’s breathing through the nose.”

Mr Silasila said the operation would be his third treatment after surgeries in 2008 and in 2009 at the CWM hospital.

Dr Pudel said Mr Silasila’s surgery would take two to three hours and a night in hospital for recovery.

“We have variety of patients to treat and those who were born with conditions which were congenital and this has to be taken out,” he said.

“We also treat patients who were born with syndromes.

“We will be here for 10 days altogether.”

He said he was confident that Mr Silasila would feel better after the surgery.
