The Suva Reef Surfers Fiji (SRSF) in partnership with the Fiji Surfing Association are working towards developing young surfers for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

This Saturday the SRSF are holding their annual Pacific Building Solutions (PBS) Lighthouse Challenge. The competition will be held at the west side of the Suva Harbour entrance, next to the twin lighthouse in Suva.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, SRSF media representative Blair Robertson said the competition would create a great platform for our surfers in terms of good exposure and to improve on their surfing skills. “Our main expectation of hosting this event is for the development of Fijian surfers especially the juniors as we want to have a potential team for the 2020 Olympics,” Robertson said.

He said they are expecting more than 40 participants to take part.

The competitions will be on:

 Open men

 Open women

 Masters (men over the age of 40

 Under-16 men

 U16 women.

“The surfing event at the Suva reef has been going for many years and surfing is an environmentally conscious sport where surfers focus on conserving the environment. Suva Reef Surfers Fiji would like to thank the sponsors Pacific Building Solutions and Donut King for backing this annual event.

Robertson said competitors and spectators are to assemble at the Royal Suva Yacht Club at 6.30am on Saturday before they are transfered out to the reef.
