Vodafone Fijian Under-19 goalkeeper Francine Lockington was laid to rest in Vatulaulau, Ba yesterday.

And there to pay their final respects were her teammates after winning the silver medal of the OFC Women’s Under-19 Championship in Auckland, New Zealand.

The 17-year-old fell sick in May while in camp with the team.

Coach Naomi Cavasiga shared her moments with Francine.

“I knew Francine well as I was her assistant coach during the OFC under-17 tournament in Cook Islands in 2015,” she said.

“She was brought up in Ba and she first played as a utility player for her district team. Francine was a very humble and influential person, every time she plays in the team she used to be a great source of motivation for the players.

“Looking back at our last tournament together in Cook Islands Francine was recognised for her talent and was given the golden gloves award which was also the first for any Fijian football team.

“It is very sad that she had to leave us at a very young age as she will be turning 18 next month. Francine had played for Lautoka and had interests in other sports such as athletics and hockey. She will forever be remembered for her contribution.”
