Coach of the Fijian team to play in the 2017 National Rugby Championship in Australia Senirusi Seruvakula yesterday named an extended squad of 57 players.

The players will have a fitness test on Tuesday at the High Performance  Unit Gym in Suva at 9am and are expected to bring with them necessary training gears and their passports.

Following the first fitness test the extended squad will be cut to 36 and the squad will march in for a three-day camp on August 7-9.

Fiji play Brisbane City first at Ballymore on September 2 and Melbourne Rising on September 9 at Harlequin Oval in Melbourne.

The Fijians play their first ever home game two weeks later on September 16 when they host the NSW Country Eagles at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.

The other teams to make the trip to Fiji will be defending champions Perth Spirit at the ANZ Stadium on September 23, Queensland Country on October 21 at Churchill Park, Lautoka and the Sydney Rays at the ANZ Stadium on October 28.

“It will not be an easy journey for us since most of these players playing in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne are playing Super Rugby and for the Wallabies,” Seruvakula said.

“This is a different level of competition and the eight rounds will be tough. It involves a lot of preparation and travelling so for the players to win a spot they will need to work hard,” Seruvakula said.

The Fiji Rugby Union confirmed several Vodafone Fijian U20 players were also in consideration to join the team after the Junior World Rugby Trophy at the end of September.

The competition also allows for the engagement of the overseas marquee players.
