Yat Sen Primary School has again defended its title in 2017 Fiji Mathematics Association primary school category title.

The annual competition was held at the Yat Sen School hall on Saturday, July 22.

About 20 primary schools from the four divisions around the country took part.

Each team fielded five students and a reserve from Years 5 to Year 8 and from Years 9 to 13 at secondary level.

Yat Sen school scooped the overall primary school category, winning first place in the Year 5 and Year 7, earning a second spot in Year 6 and finishing fifth in the Year 8.

Yet Sen Primary School maths co-ordinator Inoke Ledua said: “We have defended the title for the fourth year in a row, so for us its become a norm to win the title again.

“In 2015, when we had to defend, that was the toughest year, so last year and this year we psych up students to defending rather than just going in to win.

“Its easy to win, but its very hard to defend. What we focus on is defending so we get the students to have the attitude that they can defend when its comes to this competition,” he said.

“We started preparing our team from Term One. We started an in-house competition within our school where all the Year 5 to Year 8 sat for an exam.

“I would like to thank the Fiji Mathematics Association, the school management, all the teachers and the parents as well for allowing the team to participate even allowing the competition to be held at the school.”
