The tender for the removal of the Southern Phoenix from Suva Harbour has been closed.

Replying to queries sent by the Fiji Sun, Victor Fatiaki the General Manager Cruz Holdings Limited said – “Yes, the tender had been closed on July 14th 2017 and now evaluation and assessment is in progress.”

He said once this was completed then awarding of tender to the successful bidder would follow.

“These should take at least four weeks from the closing.”

The Southern Phoenix is one of the wrecks in Suva Harbour that needed to be removed.

In an earlier interview with the chief executive officer of the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) Vajira Piyasena said they had issued the removal order to Cruz Holdings Limited, the owner of the sunken vessel Southern Phoenix.

“FPCL has already issued the removal order to Cruz Holdings Ltd,” he said.

He added – “It is the ship-owner’s responsibility to remove all cargo and the sunken vessel.”

Mr Piyasena said some of the wrecks in Suva Harbour were than 7 -8 years old and FPCL was unable to locate the owners of these derelicts.

However, he said FPCL had undertaken this massive task to remove them and the only drawback was the cost of removal as FPCL did not have sufficient funds allocated to remove all wrecks.

“We have already initiated legal action against the owner of Sulivan and have even issued removal order to Government Shipping Services (GSS) to remove “Tug 7”.

He said that the Southern Phoenix was not the only case. However, unlike in the past he said FPCL was now taking stern action against the ship owner /s as they did not want the derelict list to increase any further.

Priority list of vessels to be removed from Suva Harbour as supplied by FPCL – Tunatuki, Southern Phoenix, Degei II, Western Pacific, Tug 7, Shan Yu #16, Barge Dautukiduru, Victory 2, Pingyang, Sunstar, Lady Geraldine, Vuniwai, Fishing Vessel(No: 1), Pyremo, Dolphin Free, Swift, Pacific Nomad, Tylo, Jack 21, Fishing Vessel (No: 2) and Ika 5.
