Herleen Emily, Fiji Sun Letter of the Week writer and headgirl of Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswami Memorial College, was one of the hundreds of students at the University of the South Pacific’s Open Day.

She and her 116 Year 13 classmates left Nadi in their school bus at 6am and arrived in Suva at 9am.

“It feels so good to be here in USP. It is so big and the atmosphere is so energetic and it feels like I am in overseas,” Emily said.

The 18-year-old said it was her first time to visit the university and she plans to study law next year.

“I was inspired by the good governance that we have here. Like we see, the Bainimarama Government is leading the country with so much transparency and that motivated me to be the headgirl.

“I always wished to lead my fellow students to the right path,” said Emily.

She started writing for the Fiji Sun Letter of the Week column since last year, of which her first letter won the best Letter of the Week.

“Fiji Sun is a wonderful newspaper that gives out the information and now they are giving us 200 pages copies of the Fiji Sun to our school for free which I am very thankful as they are reaching out to the community to give transparent information especially to the students,” she added.

Her first letter was about passers-by making fun of a man who would pick up rubbish in her area.

“He was trying to keep the environment clean but people who would pass by would tease this guy who was trying to pick up rubbish. Because of that I wrote to the Fiji Sun because people are doing this when some others are doing a good job for our country,” said the passionate writer.
