The container vessel New Guinea Chief berthed at Suva Port on August 07.

It unloaded imports into Fiji that included break bulk cargo.

When asked Swire Shipping national operation manager Shyam Reddy said the New Guinea Chief unloaded containers and break bulk cargo.

According to Wikipedia break-bulk cargo include construction equipment, manufacturing materials, oversized vehicles, boats, cranes, turbine blades, ship propellers, generators, large engines and more.

Mr Reddy did not disclose what were in the containers.

“All the imported goods unloaded were for Fiji companies,” he said.

After unloading the vessel continued its journey to Samoa, Tonga, Taiwan and South Korea.

Wikipedia says – “Ships that are used for break-bulk shipping are often outfitted with special cranes and other pieces of equipment to accommodate such loads.”

The New Guinea Chief according to Mr Reddy provides the Pacific North Asia Services that include – Qingdao in eastern Shandong Province on the east coast of China, Busan in South Korea, Yokohama in Japan, Majuro in the Republic of the Marshall Island, Tarawa in the Republic of Kiribati, Lautoka and Suva in Fiji, Pago Pago in American Samoa, Apia in Samoa, Nukualofa in Tonga, Noumea in New Caledonia, Sanito in Puerto Montt in Chile, Kaohsung in Taiwan and back to Qingdao.

“PNA services offer dedicated sailings connecting Asia and the South Pacific.”

According to Mr Reddy it also accesses services from Australia, USA, Europe.

Swire Shipping has recently opened their new office in Walu Bay, Suva.

Currently 30 vessels from Swire Shipping Company operate in the Pacific.
