Justice Temo added that by offending against the complainant, Bola showed no regard to her right as a human being

In a village setting, older people are supposed to look after the younger ones.

These were sentiments echoed by Suva High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo yesterday while sentencing a rapist to 14-years imprisonment.

Panapasa Bola, 30, was told that he did the opposite by abusing a child.

He is eligible to serve a non-parole term of 12-years imprisonment.

“The court always views the rape of a child as a serious matter, which deserved a lengthy prison sentence.

“You must not complain when your liberty is taken away to pay for your crime,” Justice Temo said.

It was revealed that on May 24, 2008, in the Eastern Division, the 13-year-old victim went to collect coconuts with a younger male relative in the bush.

While collecting coconuts the two were separated and the victim was left gathering alone.

Not long after, the accused who was accompanied by two others, approached the victim, threatened her and forced himself on her.

After raping her, they threw her into a nearby river.

Justice Temo added that by offending against the complainant, Bola showed no regard to her right as a human being.

He added that the sentence was designed to punish Bola in a way to protect our communities from perpetrators, deter would-be offenders and to signify that the court and communities denounce rape.
