Three employees of a prominent shopping mall in Suva will appear in the Suva Magistrates Court today for the obstruction of two tax officers from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service.

According to the Revenue and Customs Service, the charges had been filed in court on the 13th of July this year.

As per the Tax Administration Act, the obstruction of a Revenue and Customs officer attracts a fine of up to $25 000 or imprisonment exceeding 24 months or both.

This is one of the first ever obstruction case before the court brought by the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service.

It was alleged that the two tax officers were carrying out their inspection duties under the Income Tax Act and the Value Added Tax Act.

According to the Revenue and Customs Service chief executive officer Visvanath Das, the two were stopped from performing their inspection duties and were removed from the building.

“We appeal to the business houses and individuals to cooperate with our officers verifying their tax registrations, lodgements and necessary remittance of taxes to the Tax Office,” said Mr Das.
