The need for parents to be involved in a child’s eating lifestyle is important in changing mindsets and leading a healthy life.

This was highlighted yesterday by the Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar while launching the National Health Promoting Schools (HPS) project Logo 2017 in Suva.

“To promote healthy eating, one should start with themselves to show a good example to others,” Ms Akbar said.

“If we are to protect our future generations, we need to start with ourselves.

“We need to change mindsets of people to eat healthy and teach our children to lead a healthy lifestyle.”

Ms Akbar added that Fiji like other Pacific Island Countries has a high rate of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) resulting in illnesses that could easily be avoided.

She added parents need to teach their children to eat healthy and practice it even after school hours.

World Health Organisation (WHO) representative, Dr Wendy Snowdon said the partnership with Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education in promoting child health in Fiji will ensure school children are made aware of healthy lifestyles.

“Fiji is faced with a number of health issues due to globalisation and urbanisation, there are changes in our diets and eating habits which leads to risk factors such as NCDs, malnutrition and anaemia in children and other diseases,” Dr Snowdon said.

The National Health Promoting Schools (HPS) forum aims to review issues faced by children in Fiji in the areas of nutrition, school canteens and proper diet.
