The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) is looking at ways to assist sugarcane farms in cane belt areas that have not experienced any rainfall with mobile irrigation units as per the Government’s assistance in the 2017/2018 budgetary allocation.

FSC chief operating officer Navin Chandra said rainfall has been a major issue facing the industry due to pro-longed drought affecting mainly the newly planted cane and the ratoon crop after harvest this season.

“In a bid to help salvage the growth, the industry has planned to buy a set of irrigation equipment for all the sectors,” Mr Chandra said.

“The main objective of this project is that, farmers can obtain the irrigation equipment from sectors for and irrigate their sugar cane farms.”

He said the irrigation set comes with 2 x 100 metre polythene pipes, 6.5hp Honda engine pump, 2 x sprinklers with stands and fittings.

“Please note the focus for use of irritation system will be for planting of new cane on fallow land or for replanting,”

“Further, to this FSC is designing tractor-drawn 3,000 litre water tanks which farmers can also get to help irrigate their farms.

There are a few areas within reach of rivers and streams and farmers will be able to source water from these places to revitalise their cane.

With a steep target of taking our current crop of two million tonnes to 2.89 million in 2018, it is crucial we immediately get some sort of irrigation to continue planting of cane.”
