Ratu Kadavulevu School U16 flanker Joeli Matalaweru aims to be the first in his family to be a Vodafone Flying Fijian.

The Wailevu, Macuata native took out the man of the match award in the U17 final yesterday. They defeated Lelean Memorial School 22-18.

Matalaweru played an instrumental role using his height and physicality to his advantage.

“I was not expecting to win the best player award as I want to give my best and make my school proud.”

The Year 10 student received $150 and a return trip to either Australia or New Zealand.

“I want to thank God and also my family for their support as my aim to be the first in my family to be a Flying Fijian.”

His mother Losalini Solodrau, who came from Macuata to see her son in action in the final yesterday, said they would prepare a feast for him.

“My son’s achievement deserves a celebration and we are planning one big feast when we get back home,” Solodrau said.

RKS had a strong start leading LMS 12-8. Lodoni’s first try was scored by left wing Alekisio Mataivalu converted by first five-eighth Josefa Yavala. Simione Bulai scored their second try. LMS registered established their first points through a penalty to  Rupeni Geka and scored their first try through lock Isaac Sailo.

The boys from Delainakaikai lifted momentum in the second half scoring two quick tries through Tevita Momo and Simione Bulai while LMS scored their last two tries through Josaia Taufa and replacement player Nemani Tuimalolo.
