Simon Narayan has number of things to tick off his list as he starts his journey at Nagoya University, for the next two-and-a-half years.

The 26-year-old is not only going to do his Master of Arts in International Relations at one of the country’s top universities but he has a few things to tick off his bucket list while in the Land of the Rising Sun.

“Apart from ascertaining my Masters I would like to learn the Japanese language,” he said.

“Hopefully learn a bit of self-defence and probably be good at using chop sticks.”

Mr Narayan is one of 16 Fijians to receive scholarships to study in Japan.

This is part of Japan International Co-operation Agency’s (JICA) Pacific Leaders’ Educational Assistance for Development of State (Pacific-LEADS) which also includes recipients from other Pacific island nations.

The ambitious former Gospel High School student also completed his Bachelors in Economics and Sociology and Post Graduate Diploma in Diplomacy and International Affairs from The University of the South Pacific.

“There were moments where I felt that this may not be successful because the turnaround time is about a year but you just got to have faith and I am honoured and privileged that I am a recipient of this scholarship.”

The chief guest of the send-off ceremony on Friday was the Speaker of Parliament Dr Jiko Luveni.

Ambassador of Japan, Masahiro Omura said that the programme was introduced to support the education of young leaders of the Pacific Island countries.
