Saint Vincent College has created history in their school calendar after qualifying for the 2017 Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Football Championship.

Football has recently been introduced in the school.

To the surprise of many, the tournament debutants also created the major upset of the tournament beating Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswamy Memorial College (SSKMC) from Nadi 2-1 in their first game before going down 3-0 to the defending champions in their pool. Team manager Balram Krishna commended his boys for playing up to their expectation.

“This is the first time our school is represented in soccer and we’re representing Tailevu. Coming from a province of rugby, the boys have done wonders coming into this tournament with an upset win over SSKMC Nadi,” he said.

“Our coach Hirdesh Prasad conducted two training sessions in preparation for this IDC and I can see a lot of players express and share their feeling through this game of football.”

The vice principal said they had a lot to learn as far as the game of football was concerned.

“We have all the hostel boys in the team who had not even played in the youth grade, so this is the biggest achievement and we can say that we can produce players.”

He says people from Tailevu are so happy seeing the team participating and he hopes they come out in numbers to support the team.

“I would like to thank the major sponsor (Vodafone) for providing the jerseys, Hansons, our school management and the people from Tailevu for providing continuous support.”
