Twenty-three-year-old, Darnesh Mudaliar from Korovuto was reunited with his brother and mother in Malolo, Nadi, yesterday.

The three, and the father of the family, were travelling from Korovuto to Sigatoka when the minibus they were in collided with a vehicle at the junction of Pakapaka Road in Nadi on Sunday.

The incident claimed the life of the driver on the other vehicle, Jeremaia Vugakoto.

Mr Mudaliar said the day started like any other Sunday, but it had significance since they were travelling to Sigatoka for a ritual at one of their relative’s place.

He said they boarded the van along the highway near Korovuto College.

“I was seated with my brother at the back. The driver steered us to the oncoming lane where a car was heading our way.

“He tried applying the breaks,” said Mr Mudaliar.

He said he was conscious throughout the incident, and tried waking his brother up.

“I was not scared but just in shock since this was the first time that this has happened to me,” he said.

“I was wide awake but I could see my brother was unconscious, so I picked him up and tried waking him up.”

He also tried helping his father who was seated in the middle seat.

“I held my father and laid him on the seat. He was conscious but he was not able to move because of an injury on his leg,” said Mr Mudaliar.

His younger brother, Avitesh Mudaliar, 20, said all he could recall was boarding the van from Korovuto junction.

Their father is still admitted at the Lautoka Hospital with two other victims – a 17-year-old, and a 26-year-old Corrections officer, which Police confirmed.

Another passenger, Isimeli Matavada, 20, who was in the other vehicle, is still in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
