Superintendent of the Wesley Circuit Division, Reverend Jeremaia Waqainabete, was elected as the deputy general secretary yesterday during the Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma Bose ko Viti.

Reverend Waqainabete received 453 votes out of 665 votes in the second round of voting.

He will assume his new role in January, 2018.

Following his election, Reverend Waqainabete expressed his appreciation and looked forward to taking up the reins next year.

Reverend Waqainabete holds a Master of Arts in Contextual Theology from Birmingham in the United Kingdom and majored in Eco-theology (theology of the environment).

He has been a strong advocate for environmental stewardship by the church.

He also has a strong social justice focus.

In 2013, while a minister in the Muanikau Circuit of the Suva Division, Reverend Waqainabete established the Coffee Booth Ministry and personally leads a number of social support services through the Wesley City Mission in Suva.

Meanwhile, voting for the Vice President’s position went into round three yesterday but failed to get a clear result. The winner is required to secure 50 per cent plus one number of votes to win the nomination.

The six vice president nominees are Kalisiani Koroi, Mataiasi Kotobalavu, Sanaila Daunavosa, Rusiate Namoro, Joji Qaranivalu and Samuela Tamani.
A final outcome is expected today.
