The erosion of family values undermines character.

Commissioner Western, Manasa Tagicakibau relayed this message during the Judicial Annual Sports Day at Nadi Sangam Primary School in Nadi yesterday.

The theme of the event was ‘Be An Inspiration.’

Invariably, he added behind every juvenile was a broken family, a family in disarray.

When the family is strengthened, Tagicakibau said it eliminated the negative aspects of society such as crime and poverty.

Conversely, he added that a cohesive family builds character, commitment and self-worth.

“Strong families build a strong nation,” Tagicakibau said.

Speaking on the event, he said it was about recommitting themselves to the values of family.

Tagicakibau said family was an institution was an old human civilisation.

However, in the hectic pace of competitive modern life, he added the role of the individual becomes more relevant and challenging than the role of a collectively.

Family, Tagicakibau said, was about relationships one that is about love, affection, service and gratitude.

“It is about giving and receiving moral support in times of challenge, it’s about re-assurance in times of doubt.

“It’s about sharing a joy, a joy which has no meaning in solitude,” he said.

Tagicakibau said the sports day should strengthen the bond they have between each other as the judicial family.
