Over one million tonnes of sugar cane had by yesterday been crushed in total by the three mills.

Fiji Sugar Corporation’s Chief Operating Officer Navin Chandra confirming that of this, 110, 000  tonnes of sugar resulted from the crush.

“We have crushed 1 million tonnes already and have made 110, 000 tonnes of sugar and when you compare this to last year at the same time we only made about 85,000 tonnes of sugar,” Mr Chandra said.

“Our target for this year is about 2 million tonnes of cane. We are half-way through the sugar cane harvesting season so everything is tracking well.”

He said FSC was looking forward to getting as much cane crushed as possible before the rainy season.

“The other opportunity we have is to get in to planting as we had some good rain especially in the Western Division,” he said.

“We want farmers to prepare land for planting.”

He  said that the efficiency in the mills had definitely improved.

“The positivity we see in the industry is fantastic.”

He added: “Staring from today, we are meeting all our field staff, extension officers and we will talk about the planting season and the new budget and how it will be rolled out.”

FSC met with their field officers from Rakiraki, Tavua and Ba in Ba yesterday.

They would be meeting the field officers in Lautoka today and Labasa tomorrow.
