The winners of the 2017 Courts Inter District Championship (IDC) will walk away with more prize money after Fiji Football

Association increased the prize money to be paid out to the victorious teams during the Courts IDC in Lautoka in October.

The prizemoney for the premier division winner has increased from $20,000 to $22,000.

The runner-up will get $6000 and the losing semi-finalists will receive $1000 each. Sponsor’s Courts have given a total of $130,000 for the six-day event.

Courts Fiji director of marketing Anil Senewiratne said this was their final year of our sponsorship agreement with Fiji Football Association, but talks were underway to renew the deal for another five years.

“The new sponsorship deal will be announced during the Courts IDC,”Senewiratne said.

The pool draws for the 2017 IDC was held at the Courts Store in Lautoka last Saturday. Defending Premier Division champions Labasa heads Group B with Ba, Rewa and Dreketi.

Hosts Lautoka is the top seed in Group B which includes Suva, Nadi and the winner of the Vodafone Senior League (VSL) that will be either Tavua or Seaqaqa.

In the senior division, Group A will be headed by the loser of the VSL with Nadogo, Tailevu Naitasiri and Navua. Group B has Rakiraki, Savusavu, Nadroga and Lami.

Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel said they have been in partnership with Courts for the past 18 years.

Patel said the IDC was one of the largest sporting events to be held in the country.

“This is the biggest sponsorship for a single tournament that Fiji FA has got,” he said.

“The prizemoney has increased this year. The premier winner will receive $22,000.

“In the senior division, the winner will receive $7500. The runner-up will get $2500 and losing semi-finalists $500 each.

“It is a big pool of money. We get the sponsorship and are giving it back to the districts.”

The IDC started back in 1938 with Rewa winning the first two editions of the tournament.

Patel said the IDC was the most prestigious event on the Fiji FA calendar. The Courts IDC kicks off on October 10 and takes a break on October 13 for the Fiji FA annual congress. The semifinals will be played on October 14, while the finals will be played on October 15.

The IDC tournament started in 1938 and this has made IDC the longest running football tournament in Fiji.
