A Fijian team will take part in the 2018 Brisbane Global Rugby Tens completion at Suncorp Stadium on February 9-10.

Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor highlighted this is another great achievement.

“Our inclusion comes after negotiations between FRU and Duco Events. We are delighted at this great opportunity,”O’Connor said.

“The FRU board has been committed to creating pathways for our local players and our inclusion gives our local players yet another opportunity to be exposed to international competition especially after our inclusion in the NRC competition.”

O’Connor thanked the FRU board for their foresightedness and drive to ensure that our local players were given such opportunities to international tournaments so that they are able to compete for positions in the Flying Fijians.

“Our local players will be playing against Super Rugby teams and it will indeed expose them to a high level competition,”O’Connor said.

“The opportunity will also expose our local our coaches and technical staff to the vigorous requirements of international competitions.”

The Brisbane Global Tens Competition will feature five Australian and five New Zealand Super Rugby teams with four other teams from around the world to be invited each year.

The 2018 competition sees Fiji making up the fourth invited team joining Samoa, French giants Pau and Japan’s Panasonic Wild Knights.

Following a hugely popular debut this year, the event switches to a day-night format, with matches to begin in the afternoon and run into the evenings.

“The 2018 event promises to be even bigger and better. I’d encourage all Fijian rugby fans to get to Brisbane to experience what is a truly superb weekend of top class rugby,” tournament chief executive Rachael Carroll said.

This year, the tournament was won by the Chiefs who defeated the Crusaders in the final 12-7.

O’Connor confirmed that they will commence to source a name and a sponsor for the team.
