Fijian professional Sam Lee shot six under par 66 to lead after one of the 33rd Vanuatu Open at the Port Vila Golf and Country Club yesterday.

The three Australians chasing Lee are Mark Anketell (67), Peter Martin (68) and Bradley Armstrong (71).

Interestingly in fifth spot after 18 holes is Laucala Island-based Amitesh Chandra who is on even par 72.

“I was in the third group and I shot 66 in my first round,” Lee said.

“It is a great day out in the greens and its special for me since it is my first feel here.

“It was raining all morning but the course is in good condition. It has been raining since Wednesday afternoon.”

Lee thanked the effort of the organising committee for inviting the Fijian Pro and outlining the importance of the event in the Pacific community.

He added the tournament has a rich tradition, despite the devastation of Cyclone Pam in 2015.

“Despite the devastation, the tournament it is now back bigger than ever with over 150 amateurs and professionals part of it. We need to support each other.”

The Nadi-based golfer is among the 33 professionals from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific that are part of the Ladbrokes PGA Pro-Am Series which boasts AU$50,000 prize-money.

Also in the field are defending champion Aaron Cox, three times Vanuatu Open champion Brad McIntosh and the 2017 Fiji Sheraton Golf Classic winner Pieter Zwart.

Lee tees off at 7.48am while Chandra tee-off at 8.33am.
