Three hundred and ninety-one Fijians got their first homes from Housing Authority of Fiji and were successfully assisted through the government’s first- home-owners scheme.

These people were assisted over the last three years.

More applications are currently being assessed.

According to Housing Authority chief executive officer Punit Sethi a total of 509 customers had applied for assistance since the scheme started in 2014.

Mr Sethi is encouraging people who already have residential lots registered under their names but have yet to build a home to also apply.

When questioned Mr Sethi also clarified that the assistance is also for single people as long as they are first time home owners.

“Since 2014, a total of $3,580,000 has been received from government and has been credited to the accounts of successful applicants,” Mr Sethi said.

“As long as you are a first time home owner and meet the criteria it does not matter whether you are applying as a couple or as a single parent.’

Mr Sethi highlighted that applications are rejected when they fail to meet the criteria.

“This rarely happens in housing authority but some of the general reasons include applicants not meeting the first time home owner criteria and their combined household income is above $50,000 per annum,” he said.

He said the majority of applications that are pending approval are from 2017 applicants.

“All customers who already have a residential lot registered in their names but have yet to build are strongly advised and encouraged to take advantage of this government initiative.”

“As it is government is encouraging us and supporting us in our efforts to provide quality and affordable housing and lots on the most economical cost to citizens.”

Mr Sethi also mentioned that customers can take advantage of the authority’s newly-launched construction arm that will provide them with the complete package of developing the land and constructing homes.

He added since Monday they had received 92 new applications for the assistance.
