Two new permanent secretaries have been appointed.

They are Iowane Naivalurua, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Sanaila Naqali, Permanent Secretary for Fisheries.

This was confirmed yesterday by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

Mr Naivalurua was Fiji’s Ambassador to China and was based in Beijing.

Before that he was Ambassador at Large in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He replaces Robin Nair who resigned recently.

Mr Naqali was deputy Secretary for Fisheries when the ministry was merged as one ministry with Forestry.

When Mr Naivalurua starts work he will be keen to see vacant positions filled for heads of diplomatic missions in Beijing, Jakarta (Indonesia), New York (USA) and New Delhi (India).

Meanwhile, the outgoing president of the United Nations General Assembly, Peter Thomson, finishes his term on September 12. He is not expected to take any Fijian position at home or overseas missions. He could be in line for a UN role in one of his passions, oceans and environment.
