Meet Scott Walton, he won the South Pacific general manager at the HM awards in Sydney, Australia.

As the Wyndham Denarau Island, Fiji resort manager, Mr Walton is responsible for the daily operational success of the resort along with the management of 185 resort staff plus 102 sales and marketing staff.

His position involved interacting with vacation owners, resort guests, all hotel departments, vendors, the community, the corporate office and onsite sales staff.

In addition to his responsibilities at this resort, Scott was also Regional Manager of two Ramada resorts in New Zealand.

In August 2017, Mr Walton relocated to Thailand to commence as area general manager for Wyndham-managed Thailand properties.

“I could not have won this award without the commitment and support of the entire Wyndham Denarau Island team.

“We have a highly dedicated and stable team at the resort who welcome guests in such a genuine manner that they never want to leave.

“When it comes time to go home many are already looking at dates for their return trip.

“Receiving awards like this is very humbling, but I am also rewarded daily when I hear from our satisfied guests and see our team members reaching their goals.”

Wyndham Denarau Island has an average occupancy rate of 89 per cent.

One of the benefits of having a full resort year-round is that the team has learnt to always offer consistent and memorable holiday experiences, enabling us to maintain the highest level of customer satisfaction.

Future plans

In terms of future plans he said they have a lot of plans for the property and for more properties in Fiji.

“As everyone is aware, restaurants need to evolve with the times, so we have plans to continually improve our offering to meet both market and vacation owner expectations.

“Personally, my success in Fiji has opened an opportunity with Wyndham to move to Thailand and look after our managed properties there.

“It is a challenge I am looking forward to. Fiji will always have a special place in my heart.

“My family has grown up there and my wife and I met in Fiji. Hopefully after some successes in Thailand I will return to my home away from home and will continue to fly the Fijian flag wherever I am.”

The HM Awards have, for the 15th time, recognised the accommodation industry’s finest staff, properties, brands and chains across Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. Over 70 awards were presented in front of 730 attendees of the 2017 HM Awards for Accommodation Excellence on Friday, September 1 at Sydney Town.
