The Road Haulage Association (RHA) is expected to present a draft legislation based on a Memorandum of Understanding it signed with key transport stakeholders.

A MOU was signed in November 2016 between the Fiji Roads Authority, Land Transport Authority and Fiji Road Haulage Association.

The MOU is based on imposing a legally-recognised weight for vehicles under Regulation 83 of the Land Transport (Vehicle Registration and Construction) Regulations 2000.

Association president Hector Smith said: “We got a MOU in place and now it’s a process of drafting it to legislations to present to Parliament and then most of the problems will be resolved lawfully.”

He added since the MOU signing the association has grown four times in membership as it has a total of 149 members.

The association held its annual general meeting also marking their 15th anniversary at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Denarau, yesterday.

He said the AGM was a successful one and he was happy with the turn out.

“This is one avenue to meet those operating daily and to ask questions so that they can understand where they are coming from and things that they are facing.

“For them to be able to put a face to a name and then it’s better they ask things so that they can understand themselves.”

The association was founded in 2001.

It had its first steering committee meeting on February that year and the inaugural meeting was held at the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort later in April.
