Bridge repairs, including the layering of stones on the embankment slopes to prevent erosion, are underway in the district of Wainunu in Bua.

The work is carried out by Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH), a company contracted by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) to carry out its maintenance programmes in the Central, Eastern and Northern divisions.

FHH Renewals and Project Engineer North, Joe Ma’afu, said their six-member crew has completed work on two bridges and was working on the third.

The completed bridges are in Nakawakawa and Nakorolevu, while current work is being carried out on the Daria Bridge.

Mr Ma’afu estimates that the work on the Daria Bridge may take “several months to complete”, adding that the completion of the work is heavily dependent on dry weather as well as rising water levels of the Daria River during extreme wet weather periods.

The work includes repairs to the wing walls, which are located adjacent to the abutments and act as retaining walls, and on the rip rap, which is an erosion-resistant ground cover made up of large, angular, and loose stones (rock, concrete or other material).

The district of Wainunu has a population count of at least 1500 people.
