Only athletes who meet qualifying standards will take part in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu in December, says Joe Rodan Senior.

The Athletics Fiji president said they spent so much money on athletes during the 2016 Melanesian Games and 2017 Oceania Games.

“We will only send the best, we will have three trials and only athletes who meet the standard required will go,” he said.

“During the Melanesian and Oceania Games we spent a lot of money on athletes as we try to develop them. But now it’s time to select quality athletes.

“A lot of school athletes especially from Ratu Kadavulevu School will take part in the 4×400 and 4x100m relay teams.

“We are looking at competing well in the relays during the Commonwealth Games.”

Men’s high jump national record holder Malakai Kaiwalu continues to impress.

“Mala is one of our star athletes and the great thing about him is the passion he has for the sport. He has been turning up for training so I wouldn’t be surprise if Mala win gold in the Mini Games.”

Meanwhile, Athletics Fiji held their second trial during the Fiji Games at the ANZ Stadium yesterday and Rodan said athletes have shown improvement.

“I am impressed with their performances, we have a group of athletes that’s been training together.”

Athletics Fiji will have their final trials next Saturday where they will select their final squad for the Pacific Mini Games.
