Fijian Holdings Limited group chief executive, Nouzab Fareed, on Saturday challenged secondary school students to learn to be creative and come up with good ideas.

“The world is changing and we need people who can think and come up with good ideas,” Mr Fareed said.

Mr Fareed was speaking to more than 180 students at the opening of the School Fest 2017 Information Technology competition for Year 12 and 13 students from 21 secondary schools in the Central Division at the University of the South Pacific in Suva.

Mr Fareed said he started out in a similar fashion as a student 30 years ago as an IT instructor.

He went to a computer school and did a computer course. He said upon completing the course, no work was offered to him.

“In order for a company to hire or employ you, first you will need to prove that you are worth it,” he said.

“If you are a good problem solver or if you can think outside the box. If you think your objective is to serve the customer or whoever is it, then there is no hesitation for the job you are after.”

He said there are many things in school for students to overcome and nobody knows how to resolve them except the chief instructor.

He said everything was now provided for  in schools but the choice was the students; if you want to eat, smell, touch or just waste time; the option was yours.

“What you learn will not take you to be a director or a CEO, it’s your attitude and how you can solve a problem,” he said.

He said this country needed people who can think, work and have a vision and a dream.

“You should open your door, have the passion within you, be confident, get inspired, and get motivated. You need to have the habit of waking up in the morning and telling yourself you can do it.”

The competition is organised in six categories:

 Post Master: designing a poster based on a theme

 Programmer: Put your programming skills to the test

Marketing: How well can you market a product

World Hunt: Test you IT vocabulary

Quiz: Test your knowledge on current technology

Exhibit: Use your tech skills to solve an issue in the Pacific

The event was organised by Microsoft Initiative of USP’s Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment.
