FijiFirst parliamentarian Alvick Maharaj yesterday called out the Opposition, for their attempts to ride on FijiFirst policies amongst a whole host of things which kept other parliamentarians on their toes.

Mr Maharaj has not often been so vocal and his assertiveness was a surprise.

He began by questioning who gave directions to SODELPA parliamentarians; Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa or their leader outside Parliament Sitiveni Rabuka.

No one was spared by Mr Maharaj yesterday and his speech was marked with chorus of interjections from both sides of the House; in support, as well as in opposition to his remarks.

He questioned why there were two different scholarships before 2006, one for the indigenous and the other for the multi-ethnic group.

He said discrimination was not something youths gave any thought to; it was something imposed on them by politicians.

“When two youths don’t discriminate each other on the basis of ethnicity, religion, skin colour, geographical location etcetera, then why did we have such Government policies to pollute an individual’s mind,” Mr Maharaj said.

He also did not spare sitting SODELPA Members of Parliament who have been part of previous Governments.

Referring to the land deal which was struck under Laisenia Qarase where native land was converted to state land and then into freehold land, Mr Maharaj questioned why no SODELPA members who were members of the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua Party then opposed it.

“SODELPA has a sitting member who was part of this scam whereby land was taken away from the land owners converted from iTaukei to freehold land,” he said.

“SODELPA has a member under whom scholarships were offered on the basis of ethnic background, SODELPA has a member under whom almost 800,000 unaccounted ballot papers were printed during the 2006 general election.

“SODELPA has a member under whom Fiji Rugby Union lottery took place, SODELPA has a leader who started the coup culture in Fiji, SODELPA has a member under whom the biggest discrimination policies came into place.

“Does it hurt seeing your real face in the mirror?

“I believe that’s why it pains whenever we take you guys back to the reality what was happening before 2006.”
