A member of the Team Fiji men’s rugby sevens side that won the 2016 Olympic Games gold medal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has joined the Fiji Airways Drua rugby side yesterday.

Elusive utility back Kitione Taliga was among the five players that trained with the side at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka.

The 24-year-old Dratabu native from Nadi is expected to play at fullback.  The other new players are prop Semi Keli, hooker Mosese Gavidi, centre Nemani Talemaitoga and lock forward Matai Ucutabua.

Drua head coach Senirusi Seruvakula said he is employing a stringent strategy as they prepare to take on NSW Country Eagles in the third round of the Australian National Rugby Championship (NRC).

“The players are excited to be playing their first home game in Sigatoka,” he said.

“First of all they will be fighting for a spot to play this Saturday and everyone are putting their hands up.”

Seruvakula said he would await medical confirmation on the injured players before he decides on the line-up.

“Once I get confirmation from the medical staff then I can talk about the changes.”

Seruvakula also pointed out that they need the support of fans to be at Lawaqa Park to cheer them on.

“We need their support and we need them to come out here and support the team.”

At 2pm today, the team will visit the Saint Joan of Arc School in Sigatoka as part of their community and team bonding exercise.

The 23-team member is also expected to be named later today.
