A team of 41 athletes and officials have left our shores yesterday to participate at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. The competition is from September 17-27.

This would be Fiji’s first participation in the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and are represented in four sports- athletics, swimming, tennis and weightlifting.

Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) president Joe Rodan Snr reminded the Team Fiji contingent to do their country proud.

“Create history and put Fiji on the world map in the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) in Ashgabat,” he said.

“For most of you, this is the first time that you will be taking part in an international event and for some this will be nothing new to them.

“But the one thing that you will all be doing and the one thing that we will be expecting from everyone is to go out there and do your best.

“You’re all creating history by representing Fiji and participating in AIMAG for the first time and you need to remember that you are all ambassadors of Fiji.”

Turkmenistan will be the first country in Central Asia to host the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and it will also be the first time for countries in the Oceania region to take part which will make it the biggest in the history of Games.
