The Pakistani Community in Fiji had its first official function recently to mark two significant events in the nation’s calendar.

The occasion was held to commemorate events that many if not all Pakistani’s hold dear; August 14, Pakistan’s Independence Day, and August 31, the holy Eid-ul-Adha.

A cluster of 50 plus patriotic and proud Pakistani’s gathered, thousands of kilometres away from their native land, to enjoy each other’s company and spend joyous moments together.

With the aroma of spicy delicacies and sweet deserts in the air, engulfed by the gentle hum of the ocean and rustle of the palm trees that this beautiful island has to offer it was certain that no one was complaining.

The significance of these two events is why this community was so dedicated to congregate, each day captures a strong part of the Pakistani identity and culture. Firstly, Pakistan’s Independence Day is so significant because it reminds every one of the persistence and dedication of their forefathers to merge and fight for their rights to a sovereign homeland.

In the words of the captivating Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan’s founder, “August 14 is the birthday of the independent and sovereign state of Pakistan. It marks the fulfilment of the destiny of the Muslim nation which made great sacrifices in the past few years to have its homeland”.

Secondly, and perhaps the most important, Eid-ul-Adha is a holy day in which all the Muslim brothers and sisters wake up early to pray at their local mosques after which they traditionally sacrifice a goat and divide it into 3 parts, one third for the poor and needy; another third for relatives, friends and neighbours; and the remaining third to be retained by the family.

After a delightful afternoon the party simmered down and everyone returned to their homes. However one idea was very clear, the aim of this community is to introduce Fiji to the wonderful array of culture, food and customs that Pakistan has to offer, while firmly believing in integrating themselves with the local traditions and lifestyle so that they too can help in the growth and development of this lovely island nation that they have adopted as their home.
