National Federation Party MP Parmod Chand yesterday stood by his controversial statement about the 2000 events he made in Parliament.

Speaking at a National Federation Party talanoa session at Rishikul Sanatan College hall in Nasinu he said: “Whatever I have said in the Parliament was the truth, but you know what, the truth hurts.”

Both Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and Republic of Fiji Military Forces Chief of Staff Colonel Ratu Jone Kalouniwai have criticised Mr Chand over his statement.

Mr Chand said in Parliament: “May I remind this House that in 2000, the honourable Prime Minister was the leader of the military forces. He could not control his guns. He is to be blamed for the 2000 coup.”

Mr Bainimarama said: “The little coward… where was he during the event of 2000?… probably hiding under his bus. Never heard a squeak from him when the Parliament group under Ratu Naiqama took over the camp and ransacked Labasa Town. Now he is yelling from the rooftops.”

He asked where Mr Chand was when the SDL Government came up with racist policies.

Colonel Ratu Jone said people like Mr Chand had failed to appreciate the sacrifices made by RFMF men and women for Indo-Fijians “over their very own blood and vanua.

He said the RFMF together with its Commander stood with the few against ethno-nationalism. He said the RFMF was concerned with Mr Chand’s accusation.

Mr Chand urged NFP members present to be strong and mighty. He commended them for being fearless in attending the meeting.

“I want to remind those people that are trying to put fear into other Fijians, come 2018, they perhaps will not be sitting in the Parliament house,” he added.

NFP leader Biman Prasad repeated some of the party policies he outlined in Parliament that they would stand for in the 2018 general election. President Pio Tikoduadua also spoke.
