Lies are used by some iTaukei clans to challenge sworn statements in the Register of Native Lands (Vola ni Kawa Bula), a top official says.

The chairperson of the iTaukei Lands Commission (TLC), Ratu Vananalagi Vesikula said it was rather sad that these people had some records to substantiate their claims but they were not recorded in the Vola ni Kawa Bula.

These clans he said were also going around telling people of their own interpretation to get support.

However, Ratu Vananalagi said while they welcomed the claims, their decision should be based from sworn statements recorded in the VKB.

“We will not entertain any lies as the truth is recorded in the Vola ni Kawa Bula,” he said.

He reminded the iTaukei people that no one could change records in the Vola ni Kawa Bula.

Most of the challenges made were against vacant titles.

For the chiefly titles he said for the 223 posts, 123 had been filled and 100 were still vacant.

The Government wants all vacant positions – turaga ni vanua (traditional chief), turaga ni yavusa (district chief) and turaga in mataqali (clan chief) to be filled, he said.

“We are carrying out leadership workshop in all villages and many vacant titles had been occupied by the rightful people.

Ratu Vananalagi said there were still disputes over traditional titles but they would only be involved if asked by the parties involved and whatever decision made would be based from the Vola ni Kawa Bula.
