A new licensed tobacco company, Wang Zhang Tobacco Trade (Fiji) PTE Limited has entered the Fijian market.

The company began its operation with an investment of $7.5 million. Its prime business at the moment is the wholesaling of the UK brand tobacco, Ben Townsend out of Nadi.

Company manager Wendy Lin said they had set up their company headquarters in Nadi before it fully extends in coming months.

Ms Lin said: “We chose Fiji because it is the centre of the South Pacific and it is easy for us to develop our business and expand to other South Pacific countries.

“We found out that in Fiji there are not much cigarette companies, so we intend to give more competition.

“Having Nadi, Fiji, as our headquarters is a boost with the ever increasing of tourists and businesses. It is also better for our business to operate.”

Ms Lin added: “There is an investment of $7.5 million by the company,

“So far we have more foreigner employees than the local employees, and we are still looking for people to help expand the business.”

According to the directors they want to start in Fiji, and aim to go to other South Pacific Island countries.

“Our director’s decided giving percent of the annual profit of company to Fijian charities,” she said.

“Every business is difficult in the beginning, especially tobacco. We don’t try to bring more smokers; we just try to give more opportunities to the clients. We trust we can surmount it.

“Fiji is developing now; whoever wants to improve should keep challenging themselves with new things. We hope for an open arm from the Fijian market.”

The Tobacco brand is Ben Townsend; a UK brand produced under the authority of UK Ben Kang Lu Tobacco Co Limited and is imported from Indonesia.

“All the products are imported from Indonesia, and we are only selling one brand of cigarettes since our business just started, we like to take it slowly and carefully” she said.

“At the moment it is just tobacco, we started importing this year, in May. We registered our business last year in March.”

Competitor’s response

British American Tobacco general manager Ritesh Dass said they were aware of the new player in the Fijian market.

He said: “It is a free market and we welcome competition in the market.”

Ben Townsend cigarette is only found in packs of 20s with a retail price of $12.50, where as commonly bought Benson and Hedges (BH) price would vary from $12-$14 depending on the outlets it’s bought from whether at a service stations, dairy shops and supermarkets currently or rural canteens.

Ben Townsend is found in dairy shops and selected supermarkets including the Lokia supermarket in Nausori, Foodhall supermarkets nationwide, and Yees supermarket in Denarau.
