Hundreds turned up to pay their final respects to well-known specialist Dr Mridula Prasad.

The 63-year-old, originally from Lautoka, was a general practitioner and only dermatologist and specialist in Sexually Transmitted Infections in the private sector.

She passed away on September 19 at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

The funeral gathering was held at her residence in Bakshi Street, Samabula, Suva, yesterday before the funeral cortege left for the Dignified Crematorium for the final rituals.

Fellow doctors, friends, patients and relatives could not hold back tears.

Her early work in the medical field was notably in Government hospitals.

She operated her clinic, Mridul Medical Centre, in Cumming Street in Suva.

She had completed her post graduate studies in Gujarat, India, and was actively engaged in community outreach.

She was said to be a pioneer for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) advocacy in the region, and was a gender and medical activist for almost four decades.
