Education Official Praises West Schools For COP23 Support

Divisional Education Officer Western Division Ratu Joseva Gavidi yesterday reiterated the effects of climate change.

Ratu Joseva made the comment during the West Divisional School COP23 oratory competition at Natabua High School in Lautoka.

“Climate change is one of the major problems affecting small island nations within the South Pacific region and we must act now,” Ratu Joseva said,

“The number 23, in COP23 means that this year is the 23rd year for the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held,” he said.

The competition is in line with the National Climate Change Week from September 22-29.

It is aimed to raise awareness and ignite patriotism in safeguarding the environmental at the same time highlight the creative talents in students from within the Western Division.

The competition, Ratu Joseva ,said was a sign of support for Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama who would be presiding over the COP23 meeting in Bonn, Germany from November 6-17.

“And for this, I wish to acknowledge all students, teachers, the panel of judges, parents and friends for rallying here today as a show of collective support to the President of COP23, our very own Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama,” he said.

“We are all here, because we all share a mutual concern for our environment, our livelihood, our current and future generation and our Fiji.

“We are here because we had our own taste of the varying impacts of climate change in our own communities.”
