A 28-year-old man from Nadi is in a serious condition at the Lautoka Hospital after the vehicle he was driving crashed head-on with a 10-wheeler truck yesterday at the Namaka Public School junction.

Police spokesperson Inspector Jokatama Qio said the accident took place at around 9am.

Medical staff and National Fire Authority officers were at the crash scene and were able to free the driver from the wreck with the assistance of cutters, which took at least an hour.

“The vehicle was driven by the 28-year-old man and was travelling towards Nadi Town when the 10-wheeler truck failed to stop at a red light,” Inspector Qio said.

“The driver suffered multiple injuries and is in a serious condition. The driver of the truck is in Police custody. He has not been charged yet as investigations continue.”

In a separate accident at Nabou, Nadroga, the driver of a vehicle that veered off the road is in critical condition at Lautoka Hospital.

Inspector Jokatama Qio confirmed that the driver and a passenger were on their way to Suva when the vehicle veered off the road and landed 15 metres under the bridge.

The passenger was taken to the Nadi Hospital, suffering minor injuries. Investigations are continuing.
