Former rugby league star Lote Tuqiri is banking on the Vodafone Fiji Bati to make their presence felt at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup (RLWC).

The RLWC will be from October 27 to December 2 and is going to be held in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

Speaking to SUNsports, the former Bati skipper said compared to previous years, Fiji has now a greater pool of NRL players to select their team from.

“I think very highly of the Bati’s chances if only they can get their squad together,” Tuqiri said.

“I personally think that they will be able to qualify for the quarterfinals.

“If they don’t qualify for the quarterfinals then they will probably fail but I think they’re a good enough squad to do the job.”

The Bati under head coach, Josaia Rabele reached the semifinal of the 2008 RLWC in Sydney where they lost to Australia.

At the 2013 RLWC in London, the Bati equaled that feat under coach, Rick Stone and captain, Petero Civoniceva. The Bati are currently ranked number 7 in the latest rankings by Rugby League International Federation.

In this year’s RLWC, the Fijians are pooled with 10th ranked USA, 8th ranked Wales and 13th ranked Italy.

Tuqiri said he supported the moves made by Jarryd Hayne to play for the Bati again along with veteran John Sutton and Michael Jennings.

“Combine them with the likes of Apisai Koroisau and the Sims brothers then definitely we’ll have a good squad to pick from,” he added. Edited by Leone Cabenatabua
