Avete Daveta believes unity and teamwork is what helps Fiji Airways Drua tick in the Australian National Rugby Championship.

The Nadroumai, Nadroga, native and cousin of New Zealand All Blacks winger Waisake Naholo, Daveta said winning three out of four games so far is testament to the work ethic of the team.

Daveta, 23, feels honoured to be part of the team that currently leads the NRC standing with 15 points.

“Unity, teamwork is what keeps us together. We are learning as the competition progresses,” the elusive winger said.

“We are bonding stronger on and off the field. We know other teams have Super Rugby and Wallaby squad members. But we play hard and put into practice what the coaches and trainers taught us.

“After playing for Nadroga in the Skipper Cup and HFC Bank Farebrother Challenge,   I’ve learnt a lot from the NRC which is a totally new level.”

He did not expect such a big crowd on Saturday where they beat Perth Spirit 41-5.

“We called for fans and we got it, awesome support,” Daveta said.

He started playing rugby at 14 while a student of Cuvu College.

He moved to Nasinu Secondary School where he played rugby league.

“My teammates at Nasinu include Wallaby Marika Koroibete and France-based Virimi Vakatawa. I aim to be like them and play rugby overseas.”

He made his debut for Nadroga senior team in the 35-12 victory over Tailevu in the then Digicel Cup (now Skipper Cup) at the Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka in 2013.
