The mindset of the people that lead to other weakness is one of the causes of poverty, says Methodist Church of Fiji assistant general secretary Reverend Ili Vunisuwai.

After concluding one day meeting with 160 catechists and ministers of Methodist Church circuits in the Northern Division at Nasea Methodist Conference Church in Labasa yesterday, Reverend Vunisuwai said they are embarking on programmes to change the mindset of the people.

“We have conducted training for trainers who will go down to the grassroot level encouraging people to change their poverty mindset to being abundant because this is what God wants his creation to be,” Reverend Vunisuwai said.

“I am talking about poverty among church communities, iTaukei and the whole society,” he said.

We told catechists and ministers on how to eradicate poverty using the theological perspective.

“The church is now focused on alleviating poverty and we are taking this very seriously.

“The meeting is the continuation of what the Government is doing.

‘We have a monitoring team that monitors the people in church, their achievements and training.

‘We are encouraging members to do farming.

‘We are also very much concerned about the rising criminal activities.

‘Laziness is the product of unchanged mindset.

‘So unless we don’t change people’s mindset the level of poverty will continue to increase.”
