Netball Fiji received a $5000 boost from the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation yesterday to assist in their participation in the Europe Championship which starts next Friday.

The Fijian Pearls are pooled against Wales, England, Northern Ireland and Scotland and they’re expected to leave for the Europe tour tomorrow.

Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Permanent Secretary Dr Josefa Koroivueta was grateful for the opportunity to support Netball Fiji.

“We’re delighted for this sponsorship as it’s in recognition of the letter that you’ve sent to us but also recognition of how the Baby Pearls are doing,” Dr Koroivueta said.

“I believe there is a need to support our young people in sports and we look at the perspective of the opportunity for young women to participate not only in physical but also a source of empowerment to lift their standards of living. Also to promote women to become more resilience and having more self-confidence.

“I think when we read through the note we didn’t hesitate that we need to support Netball Fiji. We’re also happy to hear the Fijian Pearls are ranked seventh in the world and the Baby Pearls are ranked fourth.

“I thank Netball Fiji for looking after the team’s welfare whenever they’re out of the country competing in tournaments with respect to building stronger Fijian women.”

Netball Fiji manger RubyAnn Sorovaki thanked the ministry for their support.

“We received a cheque from Fiji National Sports Commission but we feel this one is special because it’s coming from the Ministry of Women who we’ve worked with before in terms of domestic violence.

“We’re grateful for the contribution and being the biggest women sport in the country feels great. And also irrespective of the amount of cash or any kind of support to Netball Fiji will go a long way.

“It means a lot for the girls that they are not only supported by business houses but also from government ministries. The support is huge for us and we look forward to a good outing in this Europe tour.”
