The Chinese Community in Fiji has been able to work alongside many Fijians to drive development and progress across the country.

As the Fijian Chinese Community gathered to mark China’s National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival at the Yat Sen School Hall in Suva yesterday, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama acknowledged the support of the Chinese Community towards Fiji’s economy.

Mr Bainimarama said the community’s contribution not only added to the rich tapestry of culture and diversity enjoyed in Fiji but it supported the work of the Government as they sought to uplift every Fijian.

“Chinese Fijians are leaders in business, medicine, law and civil society. They are role models in our workforce and their drive, discipline and hardwork is outstanding,” Mr Bainimarama said.

He said along with this, every Fijian had achieved eight straight years of economic growth for Fiji and have continued on the path of prosperity.

“Over the years the Fijian government has sought to build a Fiji where no Fijian is favoured on the basis of religion, ethnic background, location and gender,” he said.

He said the Moon Festival was a proud Chinese tradition that gave everyone a chance to reflect on the bonds of family, friendship, community and thanksgiving that united them all.

China’s Ambassador to Fiji Zhang Ping said the coincidence of the China National Day coming together with the Moon or Mid-Autumn Festival was a great joy to bring about a double celebration.

Mr Zhang said China and Fiji shared profound friendship where the two countries endeavored to develop a friendly exchange and cooperation based on the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit with the aim of promoting common development.

He said Fiji was a multi-ethnic nation with diverse cultures and the Chinese community was an important member of Fiji’s family.

Meanwhile, president of the Chinese Association of Fiji, Jenny Seeto congratulated Mr Bainimarama as chair of the COP23 meeting in Germany next month.

Ms Seeto pledged the Chinese community’s support to the Fijian Government for their quest in making our planet sustainable and reducing the effects of climate change.

“Our community is pleased to note the continuing support by the Chinese government towards a number of important projects on infrastructure, medical and policing,” she added.
