Lepani Waqa, a civil servant, who has four years left to retirement, appreciates spending time with his 16-year-old daughter Ilisabeta.

And they do this best by going out grocery shopping together.

This 51-year-old man from Naselesele Village in Taveuni said shopping with his daughter every fortnight allows him to teach her useful life lessons that will benefit her in the future.

“I feel it is important as a father to pass on life lessons to my daughter like saving, budgeting and preparing a good shopping list before going to the supermarket.”

The two were in the middle of their shopping when Mr Waqa gladly agreed to share his story.

Loaded onto their groceries trolley was what seemed like a month’s stock.

“We came out to try shopping here at Max Val-u Supermart because of the low prices of products that we saw advertised in the news papers,” he said.

As important as it was for Mr Waqa to save during his shopping trips, he quickly turned and pointed out that his daughter played a big part in writing down a list for the day.

“Before we left home my daughter checked what had finished in our fridge, cardboard and kitchen and noted them down with the prices that we had seen on the paper,” he said.

He added bringing his daughter out to do grocery shopping, made him feel proud as he also saw how independent she had become.

“This is the only quality time I spend teaching her constructive things that will benefit her when she is on her own.”

Aside from Mr Waqa’s hectic schedule during weekdays, he enjoys cooking for his family in the weekend.

His favourite dish to whip up after Sunday services is stir- fry chicken with rice or noodles.

With a higher level of excitement in the tone of his voice he said his first obligation to life is his family.

Mr Waqa urged all fathers to lead by example so that they may live an independant life.
