Diwali is a spectacular event in the Hindu calendar. This is where people enjoy bright lights with great food with family and friends, says Westpac General Manager Fiji, Brett Hooker.

While speaking to guests at the Westpac Diwali Cocktail at Nadi Khatriya Hall in Nadi on Wednesday night, he said they were delighted to host their business partners and customers.

“Tonight we are honoured to be here celebrating with you, our valued customers and friends of Westpac,” Mr Hooker said.

On the 19th of this month, he said the skies would be filled with fireworks and homes decorated with lights.

“This will bring brightness and joy on the darkest night of the Hindu calendar, to celebrate the most auspicious Hindu festival, Diwali,” Mr Hooker said.

He added the first day after Diwali marked the beginning of the New Year in the Hindu calendar and an opportunity to look forward with excitement.

As Westpac celebrates Diwali, this year it also marks a special year for the bank.

Mr Hooker said in April they celebrated the bank’s 200th anniversary.

The bank started in 1817 as Bank of New South Wales in Australia.

It then opened its first Suva branch in 1901.

“Our success depends on the success of our customers.

“This year focused on providing new products, digital platforms and payment technologies for our customers.

“It’s been quite a year and these achievements would not be possible without our tremendous staff and our loyal customers,” he added.

Mr Hooker said they take pride in community programmes and so far they have provided financial literacy workshop to over 7000 Fijians where they are taught to control their finances and build a secure future.
