Villagers of Nabunikavula, outside Labasa Town have banned a Christian church from their village over a sermon row.

More than a week ago a pastor from the New Methodist Church allegedly preached there.

Speaking in iTaukei, the pastor, Silinasau Takayawa, had said: “Dou nanuma ni wase ni yaqona o Na?”

The words offended the villagers.

Village headman Osea Tabuiga said the villagers came to an agreement during their village meeting last week that the group should not be allowed to conduct a sermon again in their village.

“The sermon was offensive, and rude,” Mr Tabuiga said.

“Some of the villagers wanted to chase them but we had to take them to another village to calm themselves,” he said.

Most of them were confused on how the pastor went to the village in the first place because they were unaware of the church visit.

Mere Lala, a mother of three, said as a mother she felt offended.

“I never expected to hear such sermon to come from a pastor especially stressing the point that children are conceived out of the influence of kava,” Mrs Lala said.

Pastor Takayawa when questioned, said his teachings were all biblically based.

“The issue of sexual immorality is happening. Men should not use their spouse or see other women to satisfy their lust,” he said.

“I just want to bring them closer to God and for them use their body as a temple of God,” he said.

He said he had no bad intentions or personal reasons when he shared his sermon.

“It is all in the Bible.

“We also had signed agreement on our visit to the village which was signed by the two turaga ni mataqali and permission was given by Pastor Mosese Beranayarayara,” he said.
