Wander down to the Fiji Maritime Academy (FMA) any school day morning at8.15am sharp and you will see a group of smartly dressed young men and women.

Neatly attired, pressed white shirts with black pants, complete with tie and epaulets, the future seafarers of Fiji line up for their morning parade.

FMA CEO, Captain Voi Garisau, carries out the daily inspection

It is a daily ritual dreaded by the cadets, in particular by the ones who did not shave or wash their shirts.

The standard is neat hair, tied up for the girls, and crew cut haircuts and clean shaven for the boys.

Most importantly, the assembly being at 8.15am sharp is implemented to encourage discipline so the cadets arrive every day at the right time.

Attendance is marked and any issues recorded to include diligence into their disciplinary training.

Whether a quick march or a slow step, the young ones are well under way to a bright future in their chosen career.

The cadets’ next step in the program is the industrial attachment, also known as work experience, with local shipping companies.

It is important that FMA’s efforts are continued during their training as there is only so much the staff at the Academy can do.

Imparting discipline is relatively easy compared to maintaining it throughout the cadet’s career. That’s up to them.
